How did you make this website?

Thanks to many great websites and resources that store free game assets under the CC0 license, I was able to use their data to build my search tool. I used Python to process the data, SQLite for local storage, and MeiliSearch to index the data, which powers the search functionality in the backend. For the frontend, I used vanilla JavaScript and CSS with the help of Bootstrap.

Why is this website called ArtGameSound?

The main purpose of this tool is to make it easier for game developers to find free game assets and art for their projects. Art is a broad term that covers anything considered creative or visual. In the context of games, it can include concept art, sprites, 2D art, 3D models, animation rigs, shaders, and even code. Sound refers to sound effecs and music used in games. Art and sound are two of the most important elements when it comes to making a visually appealing and engaging game.

Why can't I find a certain game asset?

There are several reasons why a game asset you are searching for isn't appearing in the search results. The main challenge is that it's difficult to find high-quality free game asset data. I'm currently sourcing from a handful of websites that I believe offer quality free game assets. However, I'll need to do more research to discover more high quality websites that offer free game assets under the CC0 license. I also need find datasets with 3D models, 2D art, sound effects, and music. Once I gather this data, I will need to self-host these game asset files and serve them to visitors. In short, this is a long term project and will require extensive research and data collection to improve the quality of search results and game assets provided. Another reason could be that the content moderation team on the website hosting the files may have removed the game asset due to their content management policy.

How to use free 3D models?

To work with 3D models you can load them into 3D modeling software like Blender, Autodesk Maya, or ZBrush. Here you can add to the 3D model, combine it with other 3D models, animate it, change the textures, or make a rendering with it. You may need to change the export file format of the 3D model depending on what game engine you are using. Common 3D model file formats include FBX, STL, OBJ, glTF, GLB, along with many others. You can then load the 3D model(s) into your game engine of choice to start working with them. Some examples of popular game engines are Godot, Unity, GameMaker, and Unreal Engine. When working with 3D models in a game engine you can add a collision shape that is attached to the 3D model node, trigger animations programmatically, or use them to build a captivating environment.

How to use free sound effects and music?

You can begin processing free sound effects and music by using audio software like Audactiy, Ardour, Ableton, GarageBand, Apple Logic Pro, or FL Studio. Audacity is my personal recommendation for recording and editing audio due it being free and easy to use. The other software is known as digital audio workstations(DAWs). This software has tons of features allowing you to produce music and sounds. You can adjust the pitch, loop samples, stretch audio, fade sound, mix and master, and do lots of other cool stuff to make unique sounds and music. If you just want to do something simple like trim music or a sound effect I would go with Audacity. After creating the desired sound effect or music piece, you can import it into your game engine to provide auditory feedback for players.

How to use free 2D art and textures?

To start you can use image editing software like GIMP, Sumo Paint, Paint.NET, or Adobe Photoshop to edit the 2D images or textures. You can crop & resize, change the resolution, rotate & flip, adjust brightness, or add filters and effects to the image. After this, there is lots you can do with the 2D art and textures. To name a few options, you can import them into 3D modeling software and apply them to a 3D model, use them in 2D animation software, or directly add them to your game project. Once in the game engine, you can use the 2D images in various ways, such as for UI design, the title screen, or in a 2D scene.
